Collaborations-Initiatives

This space features the events and workshops the project team has organized with other institutions (University Schools, Primary and Secondary Education, Public Libraries), artist spaces and NGOs.

Winter Semester, 2021 - Undergraduate Student Urban projects on Thessaloniki, from the course Lit 7-498 American Urban Spaces and Identities, School of English, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

“The Voices of the Unheard in the American Urban Spaces”

In this project, the artworks of certain ethnic and hippie communities in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco come at the centre of attention, such as Duarte’s Gulliver in Wonderland, Zimmerman’s Increíbles Las Cosas Q’ Se Ven and Maldonado’s The J-Def Peace Project murals, the mural of the Korean rapper Dumbfoundead and the mural of Ava Gardner, the song “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys and the song “San Francisco” by McKenzie Scott. The common trait which unites all these art pieces together is the vitalising energy of the American ethnic and hippie urban communities. The Mexican American, Asian American, African American and hippie artists featuring here protest against the diachronic segregation and exclusion their communities have suffered from while they highlight their dynamism and meaningful presence in the current day multi-ethnic and multi-cultural American urban mosaic.

Project Participants: Eleni Kioura, Athina Papadopoulou, Ioanna Ferentinou, Aikaterini Bogdanou

“NEW YORK CITY: on the margin”

The main goal of this project has been to explore the multifaceted cityscape of New York City and its margins through a variety of artistic and literary texts by revealing the antitheses that constitute the New York City urban space. In particular, the project focuses on the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn and the identity of the New Yorkers during a period that starts from the 1930’s and continues to this day. Every member of the NYC group has explored a specific geographic area, period and type of text (song, painting, poem, TV series) aiming to highlight issues of interracial awareness, migration, socioeconomic inequalities, criminality, urban planning and gentrification. New York City neighborhoods and boroughs have been used as maps of interaction and discourse between the genres and texts explored in the website that has been created by the group members as part of the New York City project.

Project Participants: Dora Psoma, Olga Sinanidi, Theodora Rajkovska, Eirini Laiaki, Vanesa Husic

Winter Semester, 2017 - Undergraduate Student Urban projects on Thessaloniki, from the course Lit 7-498 American Urban Spaces and Identities, School of English, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

“Filtered Urban Perspectives”

This is a collaborative creative project that approaches urban environment from a variety of points of view through the use of creative writing and drawing with the intention of revealing a vivid and pluralistic rather than a monolithic view of urban space. Project participants: Aristeidis Kleiotis, Nina Kisniaridou, Dimitra Vrousgou

Dimitra Vrousgou, “A city through different lenses”

The painting attempts to bring together multiple perspectives and sometimes antithetical perceptions of a city,

as seen through the eyes of its individual inhabitants.

Nina Kisniaridou, “Two pairs of sunglasses”

This short story focuses to the everyday experiences of two city inhabitants but it particularly highlights how

someone’s perspective of city life can affect their psychological state as well as how different perspectives

can coexist in the same urban environment.

Aristeidis Kleiotis, “Filtered Vision”

The poem featuring here constitutes an attempt to approach popular urban terms, such as flânerie and urban pastoral,

both via a positive and a negative point of view. This venture is achieved by separating the poem into two distinct

columns of text with each part facing the other. Therefore, the poem creates to the readers a sense of transition as

they move through it while comparing and contrasting the images appearing in the two opposing columns,

which certainly affects the kind of vision the poem emanates.

"Salonican Squats and Urban Identity Formation"

The present project is a short documentary that focuses on the occupied spaces (squats) in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, and how they contribute to the enhancement of its identity. Squats promote an alternative way of looking at and understanding the city character. Their function as political centers and carriers of a socio-cultural and political consciousness transform them into unconventional and open urban-house centers of resistance, action and community empowerment.

Project participants: Maria Kalaitzi, Marianthi Kyrou, Ioanna Mantopoulou, Panagiota Papavasileiou

"The City of Thessaloniki through the Camera Lens"

In this project we explore Thessaloniki through the camera lens in an attempt to decode and discover the city’s little secrets. Each one of our photos captures a different angle of the city in an effort to present Thessaloniki’s multifaceted character. The aim of this project has been to examine the city space through various perspectives by focusing on the following categories: noisy and isolated parts of the city, low and upper parts of the city, inner and outer spaces.

Project participants: Giorgos Kotenidis, Apostolis Petsis, Anatoli Petsou

"Unfolding the layers of Thessaloniki through artistic expression"

In the context of this creative project we created a hard copy journal consisting of different personal perspectives of the urban space of Thessaloniki through a variety of artistic media (photography, poetry and painting). The material created corresponded to the following four sub-categories: Connecting and Disconnecting, Fears, Dreams and Desires and Observations. The journal and material contained in it aims at the creation of a collective physical manifestation of diverse personal experiences of Thessaloniki with the intention of enabling the readers to empathize with the experiences, emotions and thoughts shared.

Project participants: Aikaterini Papanastasi, Maria Schiza, Foteini Tyrovouzi

Feb. 22nd-23rd & Apr. 4th, 2017 – Senior High Intercultural School of Evosmos Thessaloniki Creative workshops for Secondary Education Schools – Theme: “Exploring Space through Narrative and Digital Tools”

"Re-Experiencing the Urban Environment through Interactive Fiction"

The present activity was part of a two-day workshop that took place on April 22nd and 23rd, 2017, in the Intercultular Senior High School of Evosmos, Thessaloniki. The participants were the students of the classes A’1 and A’2.

The particular activity involved the creation of a short work of interactive fiction through the use of the open-source tool Twine (https://twinery.org). Drawing on the students’ own environment and their own urban experiences, the interactive story that was produced by the students focuses on a fictional character walking around the city of Thessaloniki and visiting different urban areas. While doing so, the character encounters various dilemmas and is required to make specific choices with regard to various social/cultural/environmental issues. The story offers alternative endings, since it is the readers/players that decide how the story unfolds by actually selecting themselves the actions that the main character will take in the face of each dilemma.

Workshop Description "Travelling and the Self"
Coordinator: Despoina Feleki

Students of the 2nd Form Senior High of the Multicultural School of Evosmos took part in a workshop ornanized by Dr. Despoina Feleki in cooperation with "The Multimodal Group" of the Department of American Studies, School of English Language and Literature, AUTh. The aim of the workshop was to introduce Senior High School Students to excerpts of American and Greek Poetry through the use of a WebQuest, which is an inquiry-based mode of teaching and learning practicing the students' innate need for research and team work. Students reflected upon the issues of travelling to one's Ithaka, immigration, moving home environment, personal experiences and expressed themselves creatively.

SUBWAY RUSH HOUR (1924)

This project constitutes a response to Langston Hughes' poem "Subway Rush Hour" (1924). After discussing with the students the images and emotions this particular poem triggers, they were asked to respond to the poem by focusing on two or three words found in the text that summarize their emotions. Using drawing, the students were asked to find ways to incorporate the words they've selected from the poem into their pictures. Simultaneously, they were alerted to particular characteristics of the medium they were using, such as the space and the double surface of the page, the interleaf, the cover and binding, becoming thus familiar with the special features of book technology. The final project was stitched together and became an actual book, "THE BOOK OF OUR CITY".
